Young Parents is a specialized initiative of Youth Unlimited Toronto. It started 25 years ago when a ministry worker in another Youth Unlimited program noticed a need for supports for teen moms they were encountering in the Scarborough area. A program was started called Time Out for Teen Moms.
Vulnerable and isolated teen moms were welcomed into a non-judgmental environment and offered mentorship to assist and encourage them as they raised their children.
Our program has gone through many changes since those early days, including starting new groups across the GTA, extending the supports to young adult parents (up to 25 years old), and recognizing that young dads are also seeking encouragement and guidance. However, we remain true to the original vision to offer help and hope to young parents.
Young Parents is a specialized initiative of Youth Unlimited Toronto, whose vision is transformed youth transforming our city.
In our our context this means that we offer help and hope for pregnant and parenting youth (ages 15-25) in the GTA. We believe in the potential of every young parent we support to becoming a transformative presence in their homes and communities.
We invite young parents to participate in our support groups, which are spaces of belonging and support. We accompany young parents on their journey of parenthood and help them find resources and “build a village” around them to help them raise their children.
We strive to provide a safe place where young parents can be themselves and find friendship. We model healthy relationships that demonstrate to young parents that they are valued and affirmed. We are faith-based sharing Christian principles to help young parents acquire peace and joy and share it in their homes and communities.
We currently have young moms programs in Oshawa, Toronto (East York), Etobicoke, Brampton, and Scarborough, and a young dads program in Toronto. For more information about these programs, visit our Young Moms and Young Dads pages.
